The date code, in short
A Louis Vuitton date code is a small stamp of letters and digits, usually on a leather tab inside the lining. People often call it the serial number, although it is not one.
01
Factory and date
Since 1990, two letters stand for the workshop and four digits for the month and year. From 2007 the digits give the week of the year instead of the month.
02
Well hidden
The code almost always sits inside, on a tab in a seam or an interior pocket. Exactly where depends on the model, sometimes also on the year and size.
03
A chip since 2021
In spring 2021 Louis Vuitton replaced the code with a sewn-in chip, which is why newer bags usually have none.
04
Not proof on its own
Counterfeits copy valid codes. A consistent code is a first indication, never proof that a bag is genuine.
How the checker reads
Six codes from our own stock. The table shows what the checker reads from each one.

TH0997 | 1990 to 2006 | Produced in September 1997 | France |
VI8901 | 1980s with factory code | Produced in January 1989 | France |
MB841 | 1980s with factory code | Produced in January 1984 | France |
822 | Early 1980s | Produced in February 1982 | – |
Where the code sits
Almost always inside, usually on a small leather tab in a seam or an interior pocket. On wallets and pouches it is often tucked under a card slot. The code is tiny and often faded, and sometimes it sits on two lines or with a space. A flashlight held low, from the side, shows it best.
The table describes where the code sits on most bags of a model. Over the years, though, Louis Vuitton has moved it again and again, sometimes even between the sizes of one model. On an Alcantara or microfibre lining the code is stamped straight into it and is often barely legible. If you cannot find it straight away, look in every pocket and under every tab.
| Model | Where the code sits | Since |
|---|---|---|
| Speedy | Under the loose interior pocket, on one of the small leather tabs riveted to the lining. Only one of the tabs carries the code. Photo ↓ | – |
| Neverfull | Under the interior zip pocket, on a small leather tab in the seam, usually on the right. On Epi leather it sits inside one of the handles, and the pouch (from 2013) has its own code. Photo ↓ | 2007 |
| Alma | Inside the flat interior pocket on a small leather tab in the seam. On older Epi pieces with Alcantara lining it is stamped straight into the lining and often faded. | – |
| Pochette Métis | In the zipped pocket on the back, on a small leather tab, usually on the right. Not in the main compartment. | 2012 |
| Pochette Accessoires | Inside near the top, on a small leather tab in a seam or stamped straight into the lining. Photo ↓ | – |
| Mini Pochette Accessoires | On a small interior leather tab. Thinly documented. | – |
| Multi Pochette Accessoires | In the large pochette, stamped into the lining or on a leather tab at a seam. The pieces normally carry different codes. | 2019 |
| Favorite | On a small leather tab in an interior seam, often near the strap ring. Thinly documented, the spot may vary. | 2012 |
| Keepall | On a small leather tab riveted to the lining near the zip. Of several tabs only one carries the code, usually the one under the pocket. On old pieces often on two lines, such as “V.I.” over “873”. | – |
| Noé | On a small leather tab inside, at a seam or straight on the lining. Thinly documented, the spot may vary. Very old Noés sometimes have no code at all. | – |
| NéoNoé | On a small tab in the central zip compartment, usually on the left seen from the front. | 2017 |
| Palm Springs | On a small leather tab in an interior seam. On the Mini usually in the back interior pocket on the right, on some newer bags lower down near the base. | 2015 |

There is no documented spot yet for Pochette Félicie (2015), Eva (2008), Delightful (2010), Totally (2009), Graceful (2017), Boîte Chapeau Souple (2018), Petite Malle (2014), Hampstead. The general rule usually applies, inside on a leather tab in a seam or interior pocket. If you have a photo, we would be glad to add it.
From about March 2021 there is usually no code, only a hidden chip. Louis Vuitton does not say where it sits.
Five bags from our own stock, each with the code clearly legible. We inspected and photographed every one of them ourselves.

How the code is built
Since 1982 Louis Vuitton has changed the format three times, and the checker recognises each of them on its own. The format used from 1990 causes the most confusion, so the two examples below take it apart character by character.
| Period | Structure | How to read it | Example |
|---|---|---|---|
| before about 1982 | – | Older bags have no date code. | – |
| early 1980s | YYM or YYMM | Year first, then month. | 822 = February 1982 |
| late 1980s | LL YYM(M) | Factory, year and month, not yet interleaved. | VI8901 = January 1989 |
| 1990 to 2006 | LL MYMY | First and third digit for the month, second and fourth for the year. | TH0997 = September 1997 |
| 2007 to 2021 | LL WYWY | First and third digit for the week, second and fourth for the year. | SD2151 = week 25, 2011 |
| from about March 2021 | chip | Sewn-in chip instead of a code, with a transition period. | – |
Since 1990 the digits have been interleaved. In SD2151 the first and third digits give week 25, the second and fourth the year 2011. This is exactly where many tables online go wrong.
Every factory code
The two letters stand for the workshop where the bag was made. Its country should match the “Made in” on the heat stamp. Some codes were used in two countries, SD for example in France and the USA, and in that case the “Made in” decides.
Louis Vuitton has never published an official date code list. Ours brings together 19 independent lists from 25 sites and holds 137 codes. Eight more are documented so inconsistently that we only keep them in the checker.
01
Digits in the code
Only the codes starting with A carry a digit, namely A0, A1 and A2. Any other letter and digit pair is usually a misread.
02
DK is special
Bags that Louis Vuitton has relined get this code, and it may differ from the “Made in”.

The chip since 2021
Since spring 2021 Louis Vuitton no longer stamps a date code but sews in a chip. The brand never announced it. Resale specialists date the switch to March or April 2021, and for a while there were bags with a code, with a chip, or with both.
01
Newer bags
If a bag from 2021 or later has no code, that is normal and no sign of a fake. Its receipt and condition tell you its age.
02
The phone test
A phone with NFC shows at most that a chip is there. You cannot read it, and counterfeits carry chips by now too. A beep proves nothing.
03
Small items
Belts, charms and small pouches still turn up with codes after 2021. On a large bag from that period, though, a code would be a clear contradiction.
04
No code at all
Bags from before about 1982 have none either, nor do US-licensed bags stamped “French Company”, or bags whose code has faded or whose tab is missing.
What the code proves
A consistent code tells you when and where a genuine bag would have been made. It cannot tell you whether your bag is genuine, because counterfeiters know the rules and stamp valid codes, often the same one on many bags.
The other way round, a code that cannot exist under the rules of its time is a strong warning sign. The checker catches this reliably, for example an impossible month, a year before the model was introduced, or a factory code that does not match the “Made in”.
It does not judge the heat stamp, stitching, leather, hardware or patina. A bag is always judged as a whole, and this is how we inspect every one before it goes into the shop. There are three questions you can ask yourself.
01
Does the country fit?
The “Made in” on the heat stamp should match the country of the factory code.
02
Did the model exist?
A code from a year before the model was introduced cannot be right.
03
Does the age fit?
Patina and wear should match the year. Pale, almost new leather on a bag from 1995 does not add up.
And the serial number?
Louis Vuitton does not give each bag its own serial number. Anyone looking for a Louis Vuitton serial number lookup almost always means the date code, and that is not unique. Many genuine bags from the same week carry the same one.
The number made of M or N and five digits, such as M40995, is the model number. It appears on the receipt, while the date code never does. If the code’s date is later than the purchase date on the receipt, the receipt and the bag do not belong together.
The Z-number on the temple of sunglasses, the M-number and size on a belt, the reference and serial number of a watch and the lock numbers of a trunk are not date codes either.
Five models, up close
Speedy
On the Speedy 25, 30, 35 and 40 the code sits on one of the small leather tabs riveted to the lining, hidden under the loose interior pocket. Only one of the tabs carries it. The Speedy has been around since 1930, so the checker runs no launch-year test here. On bags from the 1980s the code often sits on two lines, such as “VI” over “881”. On the Speedy Bandoulière it can be the left or the right tab.
Neverfull
On the Neverfull, look under the interior zip pocket. The code sits on a small leather tab in the seam, usually on the right. On the Epi leather Neverfull it sits inside one of the handles instead. The model launched in 2007, so a code from 2005 cannot belong to it. The pouch that has come with it since 2013 has its own code, which is normal.
Alma
On the Alma PM and MM the code is in the flat interior pocket, on a small leather tab in the seam. Older Epi leather Almas have an Alcantara lining, and there it is stamped straight into the lining and often faded. The Alma BB has existed since about 2010. A code or a “Made in” on the outside of the bag is a known warning sign.
Pochette Métis
The Pochette Métis hides its code in the zipped pocket on the back, not in the main compartment. Close the flap, turn the bag over and open the pocket, and you will find a small leather tab, usually on the right. The model dates from about 2012. From 2021 the tab carries no code, and a chip is hidden somewhere in the bag instead.
Zippy Wallet
The Zippy Wallet usually has no tab. The code is stamped straight into the lining, often along a seam in the main bill compartment behind the card slots and sometimes along the zip. It is small and easy to miss, so it is worth checking every compartment.
Frequently asked questions
Is there a Louis Vuitton date code calculator?
Yes, the checker above. It works out the month or week and the year from the four digits, maps the letters to a country and explains every character. Unlike most calculators it also reads the 1980s formats and tells you why a code cannot be right.
Where can I find a complete Louis Vuitton date code list?
Further up this page, sorted by country. It holds 137 factory codes from 19 independent lists and marks the weakly documented ones. Louis Vuitton has never published an official list.
Can I check a Louis Vuitton date code online?
Yes, with the checker above. It tests whether format, date and factory code fit together. There is no database that links each code to a specific bag, and Louis Vuitton itself offers no online check.
Does a valid date code prove my bag is genuine?
No. Counterfeits often carry valid codes. A consistent code is a precondition, not proof. A code that cannot be right, on the other hand, is a strong warning sign.
Why does my new Louis Vuitton have no date code?
Because since roughly March to April 2021 Louis Vuitton sews in a chip instead of stamping a code. Newer bags therefore usually have none. That is normal, even though the brand never announced the switch.
Can I read the chip with my phone?
No. A phone with NFC shows at most that a chip is there. What is stored on it stays hidden. And because counterfeits carry chips too, a scan proves nothing either way.
Can I do a Louis Vuitton serial number lookup?
Louis Vuitton does not give each bag a serial number. A serial number check almost always means the date code, which you can enter above. Many genuine bags from the same factory and week share a code, so a single bag cannot be identified by it.
Two bags have the same date code. Is one fake?
Not for that reason. Identical codes are normal on genuine bags, even across different models. It has happened several times in our own stock.
The code does not match the “Made in”. What does that mean?
There can be several reasons. Some codes were used in two countries, SD for example in France and the USA. After a repair with a new lining, a bag also often carries the code DK, which may differ from the “Made in”. If the country still does not fit, someone experienced should take a look at the bag.
My Neverfull and its pouch have different codes. Is that normal?
Yes. Pieces sold together were often made separately and carry their own codes. The same goes for the parts of the Multi Pochette Accessoires.
The date code does not match my receipt. What does that mean?
The receipt shows the model number, never the date code, so the two cannot match. If the code’s date is later than the purchase date, though, the receipt belongs to another bag. Genuine receipts are sometimes sold together with fakes.
Some people report a long “RFID serial number” on newer receipts. That is not a date code either.
What is the number with an M and five digits?
The model number, such as M40995. It names the model and version, not when or where the bag was made.
I cannot read the code. What now?
Shine a flashlight across the stamp at a low angle and photograph it with your phone. Zoomed in, more often becomes visible. Common mix-ups are 0 and O, 1 and I or L, 5 and S, and the checker suggests such variants on its own.
Do wallets, belts, shoes and sunglasses have a date code?
Wallets do, usually stamped into the lining beside the zip or behind a card slot. Belts carry it on the underside, and the M-number and size next to it are not a date. Shoes have their own code next to the size, and whether it is a date is disputed. The Z-number on the temple of sunglasses is a model reference.
Will a Louis Vuitton store check a pre-owned bag?
No. Louis Vuitton only stands behind bags bought in its own stores or online shop. The brand does not check pre-owned bags and does not issue authenticity papers for them.
Method and sources
We compiled the rules and factory codes from 19 independent lists on 25 sites and checked them against each other. Where the sources disagree, the checker says “not conclusive” instead of guessing. We tested every rule against the codes of 140 bags from our own stock, from 1982 into the 2010s.
The checker never rules on authenticity. It does not replace a look at the whole bag.
